Western History Dissertation Workshop

The Center partners with other leading centers, institutes, and programs in the Western History Dissertation Workshop. This writing workshop offers dissertation support to advanced western history PhD students in a collegial group of 10-12 leading scholars from participating institutions. Each year, one of the host institutions of the dissertation workshop will pay travel expenses for up to five advanced graduate students who are writing dissertations on the history and culture of the American West.

Sponsored Events

Throughout the year, the Center for the Southwest invites and sponsors a variety of speakers on topics pertinent to the Southwest. Since 1985, the C. Ruth and Calvin P. Horn Lecture Series has spearheaded the effort to present cutting-edge research to UNM students and faculty. Smaller talks emphasize graduate student participation, offering in-depth engagement with new scholarship in their field. Other events incorporate Southwestern history enthusiasts and other friends of the Center into events on campus.

Co-Sponsored Events

The Center for the Southwest is committed to developing interdisciplinary networks across campus and beyond by way of financial contributions, promotions and publicity, and assisting in the organization of events housed outside of History. Its initiatives in environmental and Indigenous histories elicit the expertise of scholars in disciplines like Biology, American Studies, and Fine Arts. In the spirit of collaboration, co-sponsored events on campus encourage intellectual cross pollination and expose students to the possibilities of interdisciplinary research. Scholars and institutes seeking to collaborate with the CSW may email our staff at cntrsw@unm.edu.
